British Values

Promoting British Values

At Hob Moor Oaks we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values were first set out by the government in the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2011 and have recently been reviewed for the DfE. Al pupils are respected as individuals at our school, meaning that how the school promotes the fundamental values differ depending on the needs of the individual. The summary below explains the universal offer of how British Values are embedded. Please refer to our British Values poster for more information on more targeted and specialist ways to support our pupils to develop the ski ls and confidence to be valued members of modern British society.

Democracy

Democracy is a core value in our school. ‘Pupil voice’ at HMO is achieved using a variety of alternative and augmentative communication strategies (AAC). Communication opportunities are embedded throughout the school day to promote the voice of the child on matters that are meaningful to them as individuals. During annual reviews of Education, Health and Care Plans, pupils are supported by staff to share views using symbols, photographs and videos. Weekly celebration and PSHE assemblies alow pupils to reflect and demonstrate respect on a variety of curriculum themes.

The Rule of Law

Staff and children model the importance of ‘kind hands, kind feet and kind words’ across our school. Where it is appropriate to do so, pupils are taught the reasoning behind school rules that ensure their safety and help to distinguish right from wrong. Clear routines and boundaries are embedded into classrooms. Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs) support children to manage their emotions and behaviours to stay emotionaly regulated and to respect our school rules.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are supported to develop their self-esteem and self-confidence. They are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we enable learning and provide boundaries for pupils to make choices, through the provision of a safe and empowering learning environment. Pupils are encouraged to understand and exercise their rights, for example, through PSED learning opportunities to make choices.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Hob Moor Oaks constantly promotes respect for others and this is reiterated through our classroom and key school policies, such as our behaviour policy. Staff are encouraged to chalenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour and model respectful behaviours within the school. Good behaviour is rewarded through the celebration assemblies, individual reward systems, as wel as verbal and gestural praise throughout each school day. At HMO we aim to enhance pupils’ understanding of their place in a diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience diversity. Through PSED and RE pupils are encouraged to respect differences between people such as faith, ethnicity, disability and gender. Celebrations and festivals are planned for and promoted throughout the year.
